Vintage Minnesota Hockey Take:

The 2021 annual HDM was moved to a modified Hockey Day Minnesota due to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that delayed the start of High School hockey season across Minnesota for both boys & girls hockey, and has sidelined/iced teams across the state due to team outbreaks, including the Minnesota Wild who cancelled games a mere 2 weeks prior to HDM.  2021 HDM was FSN way of still bringing this proud 15th annual tradition into your living room on TV all while being socially distanced.  HDM event was proudly sponsored by northern, Minnesota Polaris, co. which took place on Saturday, February 27 starting at 1:00 p.m.  As previously announced, the original January 2021 event in Mankato was postponed to 2022, due to COVID-19.

Highlighted by more than 10 hours of continuous hockey programming, the network broadcast a variety of Hockey Day content, televised two Hockey Day Minnesota classic (outdoor) games as well as the Minnesota Wild vs. L.A. Kings match-up from Xcel Energy Center during primetime - both donning the stunning Kings purple, and Wild in Minnesota North Stars kelly green & gold reverse retro uniforms at Xcel Energy Center.  The day concluded with the debut of a documentary looking back at the 20-year history of the Minnesota Wild powered by Xcel Energy.

Hockey Day Minnesota modified programming was anchored from a Hockey Day set located at the Guidant John Rose MN OVAL in Roseville, Minn.  Throughout the afternoon, the FOX Sports North team introduced viewers to numerous special features and reports from across the State of Hockey.

The inaugural Matt Dumba Hockey Without Limits Camp was held as part of Hockey Day Minnesota 2021.  The camp was created by Dumba to bring more diversity and inclusion to the game and help provide more children the opportunity to play the great sport of hockey.  Youth hockey players from The Herb Brooks Foundation, The Hendrickson Foundation and New Directions Youth Ministry participated in the camp led by Minnesota Hockey coaches.  In stunning HDM fashion, Matt Dumba scored the winning OT goal with .03 seconds on the clock of OT to seal the win for the days only live competitive action, which extended the Wilds unbeaten streak to 6 games, coming on Dumba's 6th career OT goal [franchise leader in OT goals].  "The day was emotional for me, to see the videos and pictures of the kids throughout the day of them just having a blast just gave me all the motivation in the world to come out tonight, really focus and try to give it my best" said Dumba - "it couldn't have been a better ending" to a [modified] 2021 HDM.
