NO 'CINDERELLA'
International Falls capped an undefeated season with a 7-0 victory over Bloomington in the championship game. Dan Mahle had a hat trick and Pete Fichuk had two goals and three assists for the Broncos. Along the way, Bloomington became a tournament fan favorite in its path to the title game. The Bears entered the tournament with a 9-8-4 records. Bloomington defeated Thief River Falls 4-2 in the quarterfinals and then topped St. Paul Johnson 3-2 in the semifinals to prevent a third consecutive title game that would feature International Falls and St. Paul Johnson.
SLAP SHOTS
- Some headlines proclaimed that the clock struck midnight for the 'Cinderella Bears' in the championship game.
- This was the first time that Region 3 was decided in a playoff. Thief River Falls defeated Duluth East to earn a state tournament berth.
- Bloomington goalie Terry Smith made 36 saves, including 17 in the third period, during the Bears 3-2 victory over St. Paul Johnson in the semifinals. Johnson out-shot Bloomington 38-10.
