A NEW LOOK
This state tournament marked the only time in the event's history where all region champions were new. All of the teams weren't new, but how some of them advanced. For example, South St. Paul entered through the back door of Section 1. The previous year the Packers were the Region 2 champs, and they would go on to win Region 2 again in 1962. This tournament marked the first time the tournament champion won each of its games by one goal. Roseau won the crown with a 1-0 victory over South St. Paul with a goal from David Backlund. In the quarterfinals, the Rams needed overtime to defeat Minneapolis Roosevelt, 3-2, and then needed three overtimes to get by North St. Paul for another 3-2 win. Richard Ulvin had the hat trick for Roseau in the semifinals.
SLAP SHOTS
- Two participating schools had the same nickname. Can you name the schools? Hallock & Bloomington were both nicknamed the Bears.
- South St. Paul was in the middle of a six-tournament streak.
- Hallock made its second and final state tournament appearance.
- Attendance surpassed the 8,000 mark for the championship game and the 40,000-milestone was eclipsed for the tournament at 40,607.
