A DYNASTY ENDS
In the quest for five consecutive championships, Eveleth had to defend its title from the back door. The Golden Bears lost to Hibbing in the Region 7 final that snapped an 85-game winning streak. They would meet again, though, with the state title at stake. Hibbing ended the Golden Bears' reign with a 4-3 victory. Hibbing goalie Don Vaia made 13 saves in the third period to preserve the victory.
SLAP SHOTS
- For the second consecutive season, Minneapolis Southwest entered the tournament without a loss. The Indians went on to place third.
- Attendance for the state championship game was 5,576.
- St. Paul Humboldt made its state tournament debut.
- The All-Tournament teams were increased to 10 players.
