NEW LOOK QUALIFYING

This state tournament featured a change in how regions were configured.  Six were standard regions and the other two offered second chances to qualify.  Region 1 representation had the runner-ups from Region 4 (St. Paul) and Region 5 (Minneapolis) play against one another for a state tournament berth.  Region 3 did not play off the winners but traded the rights every other year: odd years, Region 8 runner-up; even years, Region 7 runner-up.  Eveleth won the state title with a 4-1 victory over Williams.

SLAP SHOTS

  • Williams, a backdoor entrant from Region 3, was a school located in Lake of the Woods County. They were the first backdoor-entrant into the state championship game. They advanced with a 2-0 victory over Minneapolis Washburn in the quarterfinals and a 4-3 win in three overtimes over St. Paul Murray.
  • Minneapolis Central Forward #13 - Charles 'Chuck' Logan became 1st African American believed to have played in State Tournament.
  • Like Williams Wolves, St. Paul Murray High School no longer exists.
  • Tournament Attendance: 15,471
