Growing up in Roseau and then playing college hockey at SCSU, Sheldon started his high school coaching career as an assistant coach at Sauk Rapids-Rice in the 1988-89 season after spending three seasons in their youth program. He took over as their head coach in the 1990-91 season and remained their head coach for 20 years achieving a record of 276-215-19. During his run at Sauk Rapids his teams won 5 conference championships, many section runner-ups and one trip to the state tournament in the 1999-2000 season. He was twice voted as the Section 5A Head Coach of the Year (2000 & 2005) and in 2000 was named the Class A”Head Coach of the Year. In the 2010-2011 season he took over as the Monticello-Annandale-Maple Lake Head coach for 6 seasons until he retired from coaching after the 2015-2016 season. He finished his career with a tough loss to Princeton in the section championship. His overall career coaching record was 342-305-24 over a span of 26 years as a high school head coach. He was the recipient of the Bruce Johnson Award in 2011 for his work in the MHCA in many aspects such as being the High School Hockey Promotions Director in the early 90’s to his many years of service to his coaches as their section rep. and organizer for the Select 16, 17, 18 & Great 8 programs tryout process. He worked with the Class A All-Tournament Selection Committee for close to 15 years and also served as the Hall of Fame Chair from 2012-2018. In the 2012-13 season he accepted the nomination to become the Vice President of the MHCA and served his 6 year sentence faithfully through his Presidency and Past-Presidency. Sheldon is very thankful for all of the great assistants, friends and experiences he has enjoyed through this great game, but he is most thankful for his family for the sacrifices they gave to allow him the opportunity. “Nanette, Dallas, and Stevie, you are the greatest assistant coaches a guy could have asked for!”
