Derrick Brown

Derrick is a native of Milaca, Minnesota and a 2004 graduate of Princeton High School where he lettered in varsity hockey for 4 years.  While at Princeton he played on two State Tournament teams and was an All Conference player, 3rd all time in career points for a defenseman in school history and was a team captain his senior year.  He went on and graduated from St. Mary’s University in 2009 with a degree in Social Science Education.

Derrick is currently in his first year as the Head Boys Hockey Coach of St. Cloud Cathedral (2015-2016).  Prior to Cathedral Derrick spent 6 seasons coaching at Luverne High School.  He complied a (122-36-5) career record while there. He also led the school to its first ever State Tournament appearance in 2014.  He was named the Minnesota Class “A” Coach of the Year in 2014.  He was also named Section 3A Head Coach of the Year 3 times while at Luverne in 2012, 2014 and 2015.  While at Luverne Derrick worked hard with the youth program and helped establish player development goals and created the Luverne Spring/Summer Hockey Training Program.  He would work with the Mites, Squirts, U12, Pee Wee, and Bantam players throughout the months of April though July.  He would also run a training program for the Boys and Girls High School Programs in the summer.

“My greatest memories of Luverne, besides the school’s first ever State Tournament Bid, was watching players develop and grow through our youth system” Brown said “There was a ton of hard work put in by the parents and players in Luverne that allowed for us to grow the program and the game of hockey in Southwest Minnesota.”  Derrick is also very heavily involved in USA Hockey.  He has been the MN District 4 Head Coach-in-Chief the past 5 years.  He has also served as the District 4 HP 15’s Head Coach during those 5 seasons.  He was awarded with the USA Hockey New Young Leadership Award in 2014.

Derrick is currently a History and Business Teacher at Cathedral High School. He looks forward to working on maintaining the high competiveness and tradition of Cathedral’s High School hockey program and also working with the younger players in the St. Cloud Youth Hockey Association.
