Vintage Minnesota Hockey - History

1936:  Goaltender Mike Karakas recorded the 8th shutout of his rookie season in the Black Hawks' 2-0 win over the Maroons at Montreal.

1942:  Former NHL left winger Ted Taylor born in Brandon, Man.  Taylor played in the NHL 1964-65 through 1971-72 with the New York Rangers, Detroit, the Minnesota North Stars and Vancouver.

1952: The U.S. Olympic team, with eight Minnesota native players, Minnesota Coach, and Minnesota Manager - captured the Silver Medal in the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo, Norway.

1954:  The 10th annual MSHSL State Boys High School Hockey Tournament is held at the St. Paul Auditorium from Feb. 25-27th.

1960:  The 16th annual MSHSL State Boys High School Hockey Tournament is held at the St. Paul Auditorium from Feb. 25-27th.

1965:  The 21st annual MSHSL State Boys High School Hockey Tournament is held at the St. Paul Auditorium from Feb. 25-27th.

1973:  Dennis Hextall scored a goal and added four assists in the Minnesota North Stars' 6-5 loss to the Rangers, at New York.

1976:  The 'First Installment' of the WHA Minnesota Fighting Saints played their last game at the Civic Center, a 2-1 overtime loss to the San Diego Mariners in front of an announced crowd of 6,011.

1977:  The movie Slap Shot was released in theaters featuring five former WHA Minnesota Fighting Saints players in the movie: Steve Carlson, Jeff Carlson, Dave Hanson, Jean Tetreault and Bruce Boudreau. 

1980:  The entire 1980 Miracle On Ice team and staff were sent to the White House via two Boeing planes to meet President Carter following the Mens Olympic Hockey team Feb. 24th Gold Medal win over Finland 4-2, and the country's stunning win over the Russians in the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Games.  Following that afternoon, every Minnesota native player, coaches and management were greeted to a heroes welcome at Minneapolis/St. Paul Air Force reserve terminal to 1,000's of jubilant fans on the tarmac.

1984:  Mark Napier scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 5-1 win over Buffalo at the Met Center.

1987:  New Jersey's Aaron Broten posted his 184th career assist to break Wilf Paiement's all-time club record (183) then added a goal as the Devils beat Edmonton 4-2.

1988:  NHL defenseman Jamie McBain born in Edina, MN.  McBain has played in the NHL since 2009-10 with Carolina and Buffalo.

1990: Brett Hull, alumni of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, scored his 59th goal of season playing for the St. Louis Blues breaking family record of 58 set by his father Bobby Hull.  Brett then added two more goals for his 6th career hat-trick in a 6-5 loss at Montreal Canadiens.

1994:  Cities Hockey Inc., Dan Brooks & Tom Sagissor of the Minnesota Arctic Blast attend league meetings, and the RHI Draft in Los Angeles.  The team drafts 15 players including:  Randy Skarda, Cory Laylin & John Young.  Also drafted in the celebrity draft was Chip Lohmiller: Washington Redskins kicker.

2000:  Wild selected Curtis Leschyshyn from Carolina Hurricanes roster with the 10th overall pick in the 2000 NHL Draft.

2003:  Dwayne Roloson earned his second shutout in three starts (his 10th career shutout) as the Wild set a team record with their 13th road victory of the season, and their first ever shutout against the Senators, a 3-0 win at Ottawa.

2004:  Colorado Avalanche acquired center Darby Hendrickson and an eighth-round draft pick in 2004 from the Minnesota Wild for a fourth-round draft pick in 2005.

2011:  Carolina Hurricanes acquired left wing Cory Stillman from the Florida Panthers in exchange for White Bear Lake, MN native Ryan Carter and a fifth-round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

2011:  Jose Theodore made 46 saves and Pierre-Marc Bouchard scored on the Wild's second breakaway in overtime, with his goal coming with 6.3 seconds remaining in OT for a 3-2 victory at Ahaeim.  Bobby Ryan scored his 100th career goal for the Ducks.

2015:  Minnesota Wild change in the Board of Directors and investment partnership structure with Matthew Hulsizer (Co-Founder & CEO of PEAK6 Investments, L.P. of Chicago) joined the Board as Vice Chairman and Minority Owner.  Philip Falcone (CEO and Chairman of HC2 Holdings of New York) vacated his seven-year Minority Ownership in the Wild after deciding to focus on other opportunities.  With the investor changes, the Wild Board of Director's membership included: Chairman Craig Leipold, Vice Chairman Matthew Hulsizer, Quinn Martin, Mark Pacchini and Jac Sperling.
