1970:  Former NHL defenseman John Gruden born in Virginia, Minnesota. Gruden played in the NHL 1993-94 through 2003-04 with Boston, Ottawa and Washington.

1972:  Former NHL defenseman Derian Hatcher born in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Hatcher played in the NHL 1991-92 through 2007-08 with the Minnesota North Stars, Dallas, Detroit and Philadelphia.

1981:  Miracle on Ice Head Coach - Herb Brooks of St. Paul, MN was named Head Coach of NHL N.Y. Rangers, replacing Craig Patrick who was named new General Manager of Franchise.

2001:  Minnesota's Darby Hendrickson was named the recipient of the Bob Johnson Award for excellence, dedication and contributions to the sport of hockey in the United States.
