Vintage Minnesota Hockey - History

1978: Former NHL left winger Ben Clymer born in Edina, Minnesota. Clymer played in the NHL 1999-00 through 2006-07 with Tampa Bay and Washington.

1980: Steve Christoff had two goals and an assist and Al MacAdam scored at :32 of overtime to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 4-3 win over Toronto in Game 3 of the Preliminary Rounds, winning the series, 3-0.

1981: Boston and Minnesota combined to set a Stanley Cup playoff record for most shorthanded goals in one game, with four. Bruins had three and North Stars had one, but Minnesota won Game 3 of the Preliminary Round series, 6-3.

1981: Steve Payne scored twice and added an assist in the North Stars' 6-3 win over the Bruins in Game 3 of their Preliminary Round series, in Minnesota. North Stars won the series, 3-0 and advanced to Quarter-Finals vs Buffalo.

1981:  Boston set a Stanley Cup playoff record with 3 shorthanded goals and Bruins' Bobby Lalonde set a Stanley Cup playoff record with two shorthanded goals in the third period, in a 6-3 loss at Minnesota, in Game 3 of the Preliminary Round.

1985: Keith Acton and Willi Plett each scored twice in the North Stars' 4-3 playoff win against the Blues, at St. Louis in Game 2 of the Norris Division Semi-Finals. Minnesota went on to win the series, 3 games to 0.

1987: Rookie goaltender Bob Mason recorded the first playoff shutout in Washington Capitals history in a 2-0 win over the Islanders at New York, in Game 3 of the Patrick Division Semi-Finals.

1993: Chicago's Dave Christian played in his 1,000th career regular season NHL game in a 3-3 tie against Tampa Bay, at Chicago Stadium.  Christian became the third U.S. born player (after Gordie Roberts and Mike Ramsey) to play in 1,000 NHL games.

1993: Winnipeg's Phil Housley set a Jets' record with his 78th assist of the season, in a 7-5 win at Edmonton. Housley broke the franchise mark of 77 set by Dale Hawerchuk.

2001: Jamie Langenbrunner scored the winning goal at 2:18 of overtime in the Dallas Stars' 2-1 win against the visiting Edmonton Oilers, in Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarter-Finals.

2003: Jamie Langenbrunner broke a third-period tie and set up two other goals in the Devils 4-2 win against the visiting Boston Bruins, in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals.

2006: Minnesota rookie goalie Josh Harding recorded his first career shutout (in just his second NHL start) as the Wild won 2-0 over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks.

2008: 38-year-old Keith Carney became the oldest defenseman in NHL history to score an overtime goal when he connected at 1:14 of OT to lead Minnesota to a 3-2 win over the visiting Avalanche, in Game 2 of the Western Conference Quarter-Finals.

2009: Zach Parise scored a goal to give him 58 points at home for the season, tying a franchise record set by Patrik Elias in 2000-01, in a 3-2 win over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes.

2009: Dustin Byfuglien scored a penalty shot goal at 19:32 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie and the Blackhawks went on to a 4-2 win in Detroit. It was the second latest game-winning penalty shot goal in NHL history.

2009: Marek Zidlicky became the first defenseman in Minnesota Wild history to score 30 assists in one season, in a 6-3 win at Columbus.

2010: Jamie Langenbrunner scored a power play goal into an empty net with three seconds left in regulation to give the Devils a 2-1 win over the visiting Buffalo Sabres, and the #2 spot in the Eastern Conference Playoff brackets.

2010: Sidney Crosby scored his 50th goal of the season (for the first time in his career) then added another goal and three assists to give the Penguins a 6-5 win over the Islanders in New York. Jordan Leopold scored the game winner at 4:25 of overtime.

2011: Minnesota Wild fired head coach Todd Richards after two years with the team; Richards had a record of 77-71-16 in two seasons.

2015:  Minnesota Wild completed it's regular season  schedule with a 4-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues with a season record of: 46-28-8.  Minnesota Wild reached the 100 points mark for the 2nd time in franchise history, and tallied 227 goals in a season marking the most in team history with Zach Parises' goal for his 33rd of the season.
