1913:  Former NHL forward Al Suomi born in Eveleth, MN.  Suomi played in the NHL 1936-37 with Chicago.

1936:  Former MN North Stars center Ted McCaskill born in Kapuskasing, Ont.  His son Kirk became a pitcher in ML baseball.

1944:  Former NHL left winger Stan Gilbertson born in Duluth, MN.  Gilbertson played in the NHL 1971-72 through 1976-77 with Washington, Pittsburgh, Oakland and St. Louis.

1949:  Frank Brimsek recorded his 36th career shutout (and his first with Chicago) in a 2-0 Black Hawks' win at New York.  Metro Prystai and Bill Mosienko scored power play goals in the first four minutes of the game for the victory.

1959:  Hall of Famer, and former North Stars right winger Mike Gartner born in Ottawa, Ont.  Gartner played in the NHL 1979-80 thru 1997-98.

1961:  Former NHL center Joel Otto born in St. Cloud, MN; raised in Elk River, MN.  Otto played in the NHL 1984-85 thru 1997-98 with Calgary and Philadelphia.

1969:  Jean Beliveau became the first player in Montreal history to play 1,000 NHL games, when he appeared in a 4-1 Canadiens' loss to the North Stars at Minnesota.

1975:  Goaltender Peter LoPresti recorded his second career shutout to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 2-0 win over the Kansas City Scouts, at the Met Center.  Bill Goldsworthy and Ernie Hicke each scored a goal and added an assist.

1977:  Tim Young had three assists to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 7-4 win over the Washington Capitals at the Met Center.

1986:  New Jersey's Pat Verbeek scored twice and added two assists, and Aaron Broten had a goal and three assists as the Devils set a team record with 5 power play goals in an 8-6 win at Pittsburgh.

1988:  Dino Ciccarelli scored twice in the final 6 1/2 minutes to bring the North Stars from behind to beat Detroit, 3-2 in Minnesota.  Ciccarelli also added an assist.

1996:  Devils' Mike Peluso picked up 25 penalty minutes in a 5-2 loss at Boston.

2000:  Oleg Tverdovsky picked up three assists and Matt Cullen recorded an assist for his 100th NHL point as Anaheim won 6-3 at Calgary.  Mighty Ducks now had a franchise-best 15 points after 12 games.

2002:  Lubomir Sekeras scored the winning goal at 3:43 into overtime, giving the third-year franchise an NHL-best 16 points as the Wild won 3-2 against the visiting Colorado Avalanche.

2010:  Atlanta's Dustin Byfuglien had an assist in regulation then scored with 29 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Thrashers a 4-3 win over the visiting Buffalo Sabres; it was Byfuglien's 4th game winner of the year, tying a team record for D-men.

2011:  Josh Harding made 36 saves for his fifth career shutout and Dany Heatley scored the only goal of the game as the Wild beat the visiting Red Wings 1-0.

2014:  Virginia, MN native defenseman Matt Niskanen played in his 500th NHL game in the Capitals 4-2 loss vs. the Detroit Red Wings.
