1950:  Former NHL left winger Joseph Langlais born in Chicoutimi, Que.  Langlais played in the NHL 1973-74 through 1974-75 with the Minnesota North Stars.

1976:  Tim Young scored a goal and two assists and Dennis O'Brien had three assists to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 4-1 win over the Colorado Rockies at the Met Center.

1976:  Former NHL center Jason Morgan born in St. John’s, Nfld.  Morgan played in the NHL 1996-97 through 2006-07 with Los Angeles, Calgary, Nashville, Chicago and the Minnesota Wild.

1981:  Rookies Reijo Ruotsalainen and Mark Pavelich scored their first NHL goals in an 8-3 Rangers' loss to the Jets, at Winnipeg.

1982:  Dino Ciccarelli scored a goal and added three assists to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 6-3 win over the Blues at St. Louis.

1997:  Calgary's Mike Peluso picked up 27 penalty minutes in a 1-1 tie against the visiting New York Rangers.

1998:  Viktor Kozlov had 2 goals and 2 assists and rookie Mark Parrish scored his first two career goals (in his first NHL game) as the Panthers won 4-1 against the visiting Lightning, in the first game at their new arena, the National Car Rental Center.

2003:  Minnesota Wild claimed defenseman Alex Henry off waivers from the Washington Capitals.

2008:  Boston rookie defenseman Blake Wheeler scored his first career goal just 10:51 into the game to lead the Bruins to a 5-4 opening night win in Colorado.

2010:  New York Rangers rookie Derek Stepan became just the fourth rookie since 1918 to score a hat trick in his first career game, a 6-3 opening night victory in Buffalo.

2014:  Minnesota Wild broke a franchise record with 48 shots on goal in the season home-opener win at Xcel Energy Center 5-0 vs. the visiting Colorado Avalanche.  Zach Parise had a goal, two assists and 9 shots on goal and Darcy Kuemper recorded his 3rd career shutout as the Wild improved to 12-0-2 at home on opening night.  The win also was the Wilds' largest margin of victory in a home/or season opener.

2014:  Robbinsdale, MN native Blake Wheeler scored twice in :15 in the first period and finished with an opening night "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" as the Winnipeg Jets opened their season with a 6-2 victory at Phoenix. Wheeler was named the #3 Star of the Game.
