JOHNSON STRIKES BACK

St. Paul Johnson broke the northern stranglehold on hockey state championships by winning the title following a 4-1 victory over Warroad.  Johnson got two first-period goals from Roger Bertelson followed by two more in the second from Rod Anderson and Ray Karnuth, respectively.

SLAP SHOTS

  • Bertelson scored on a 47-foot slap shot in St. Paul Johnson's 2-1 victory over Eveleth in the semifinals.
  • This was the first time in tournament history that each of the eight qualifying teams had at least 10 victories.
  • St. Paul Johnson was first team to enter a state tournament with 20 victories.
  • This was the third time in five state tournaments that a backdoor Region 3 team qualified for the state tournament final.
  • Bertelson scored 2:28 into the fourth overtime to give St. Paul Johnson a 2-1 victory over St. Louis Park in the quarterfinals.
  • Warroad goalie Bob Lewis made 39 saves in the championship game.
