Vintage Minnesota Hockey - History

1941:  Frank Brimsek became the second goaltender to record 20 shutouts with Boston, as the Bruins extended their team-record undefeated streak to 21 straight games (14-0-7) with a 5-0 win over the Canadiens, at Montreal.

1942:  Chicago goalie Sam LoPresti recorded his 4th (and final) career shutout and Bob Carse had a goal and an assist in the Black Hawks' 2-0 win against the visiting Boston Bruins.

1945:  The countries 1st sanctioned, and 1st MN State High School League Boys Hockey Tournament is born on this date at the St. Paul Auditorium.  The inaugural tournament is played from Feb. 15-17th.

1950:  Goaltender Frank Brimsek recorded his 39th career shutout in the Black Hawks' 3-0 win over the Red Wings at Chicago Stadium.

1955:  Former NHL defenseman Russ Anderson born in Minneapolis, MN. Anderson played in the NHL 1976-77 through 1984-85 with Pittsburgh, Hartford and Los Angeles.

1958:  Former North Stars left winger Tony McKegney born in Montreal, Que.  McKegney played in the NHL 1978-79 through 1991-92.

1959:  Former North Stars left winger Brian Propp born in Lanigan, Sask.  Propp played in the NHL 1979-80 thru 1993-94.

1968:  Minnesota goalie Cesare Maniago made 37 saves as the North Stars lost 6-2 to New York in their first home game against the Rangers.

1969:  Walt McKechnie scored twice and added two assists in the Minnesota North Stars' 6-2 win over the Red Wings at the Met Center.

1969:  Detroit Red Wings traded Danny Lawson and rights to Brian Conacher to the North Stars, in exchange for Wayne Connelly.

1975:  Former NHL center Sebastien Bordeleau born in Vancouver, B.C. Bordeleau played in the NHL 1995-96 through 2001-02 with the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville, the Minnesota Wild and Phoenix.

1979:  Defenseman Randy Carlyle scored a goal and added three assists to lead the Penguins to a 6-5 win over the Minnesota North Stars at the Civic Arena.

1981:  Paul Holmgren scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Flyers to a 5-5 tie against the visiting Montreal Canadiens.

1981:  Defenseman Curt Giles scored a goal and added three assists to lead the North Stars to a 7-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks in Minnesota.

1982:  Tom McCarthy scored two goals and added an assist to lead the North Stars to a 3-3 tie against the Maple Leafs, at Toronto.

1983:  Minnesota's Bobby Smith had a goal and an assist as the North Stars improved to 3-0-0 all-time against the Devils with a 3-2 win at New Jersey.

1983:  Reed Larson became the first defenseman in Detroit history to score two career hat tricks, when he scored three goals as the Red Wings beat the Penguins 7-3, at Pittsburgh.

1984:  Brian Bellows scored a goal and added two assists to lead the North Stars to a 3-1 win over the Maple Leafs at Toronto.

1985:  Mark Pavelich, Mike Rogers and Ron Greschner combined to set a Rangers' team record for fastest four goals, scoring 1:38 apart in the first period of New York's 8-7 win over Edmonton.

1986:  Kent Nilsson scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 4-1 win over the visiting Hartford Whalers.

1987:  Dave Christian scored a goal and added two assists as the Capitals won 5-3 at Edmonton.

1990:  Minnesota's Mike Gartner scored his 15th career hat trick as the North Stars won 6-3 against the Los Angeles Kings.

1990:  It is reported a deal to avert the North Stars move is possible, if the club signs a long-term binding lease.

1992:  As part of the Minnesota North Stars 25th Anniversary week celebration the North Stars permanently retired Bill Goldsworthy's iconic uniform #8 in a pre-game ceremony before a North Stars 5-2 win against a visiting Pittsburgh Penguins at Met Center.  The festivities started with a "Upper Deck Super Stars" alumni game at 4:30, with a Upper Deck Dream Team set of cards given to fans entering Met Center for the game.

1994:  Cities Hockey Inc. (Ownership group of the Minnesota Arctic Blast) enters into a partnership with Minnesota Metro In-Line Hockey, the governing body of amateur roller hockey in Minnesota.

2004:  Defenseman Paul Martin became the first New Jersey Devils rookie to get a regular season overtime goal, when he scored at 3:53 of OT and added an assist in a 3-2 win over the visiting Los Angeles Kings.

2006:  Cliff Ronning officially announced his retirement after 17 NHL seasons with St. Louis, Vancouver, Phoenix, Nashville, Los Angeles, Minnesota Wild and the NY Islanders.

2014:  Mount Vernon, WA born - Warroad, MN raised T.J. Oshie baffled Russia with 4 goals, on 6 shots including the game-winner in the 8th round of the shootout at the Sochi Winter Olympics to propel USA to a win over host Russia 3-2.
